Camping in the County opens Thursday, May 15

The County of Grande Prairie is gearing up for another exciting camping season, with campgrounds officially opening on Thursday, May 15, 2025. Whether you're looking to spend a relaxing weekend by the lake, explore nature trails, or gather around a campfire with family and friends, the County's campgrounds offer a variety of outdoor experiences.

“With several improvements completed over the off-season, visitors will notice some exciting changes at our campgrounds,” says Christine Rawlins, Director of Recreation and Culture. “These updates reflect our ongoing commitment to providing well-maintained, welcoming spaces where people can relax, connect with nature, and enjoy quality time outdoors.”

Notable improvements last year include expanded amenities at Bear Lake Campground, which now features 11 powered sites, improved landscaping, and a new watersport dock with a kayak launch to enhance this prime destination for water enthusiasts. The gentle grade of the day-use beach makes it an ideal destination for kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water activities.

Families will appreciate the new playground at Hommy Campground while Old Bezanson Townsite now boasts new entry gate solar lighting and new signage throughout. Refinished fixtures and general maintenance across multiple County campgrounds have enhanced the overall camping experience.

For those looking to secure the perfect spot, online reservations have been available to the public since January 1, 2025, allowing residents to boosites at all eight County campgrounds. This convenient option aligns with Provincial and National Park systems, making it easier for visitors to plan their trips in advance.

Group camping areas are available at Pipestone Creek and Bear Lake campgrounds, while exclusive group camping can be booked at Bear Hill and Old Bezanson Townsite.

The County reminds all visitors to respect the environment, fellow campers, and park staff. Campfires should never be left unattended and must be fully extinguished before departure. Fire ban updates can be found at www.countygp.ab.ca/firebans.
